Exchange - Setting Up Email (Secure IMAP) using Outlook XP [PC]
This document explains how to set up Outlook XP for UBC Exchange using Secure IMAP (IMAPS). Please note that Outlook XP supports the full suite of services that Exchange provides such as Calendaring, Task Lists, Notes, etc... If you want these additional features, you will need to set up a MAPI connection. If you wish to use these features, please refer to the Setup Documentation at the top of the Exchange Setup Documents page.
If you currently use Outlook XP to access email from multiple accounts, please contact your Departmental Network Administrator for assistance. The instructions below are for those who are setting up Outlook XP for Exchange Email only.
- In Outlook XP, pull down the Tools menu and select Email Accounts...
- Select Add a new e-mail account, then click Next.
- Select IMAP and click Next.
- Fill out the Internet E-mail Settings (IMAP) form as follows:
- Type your full name in the Your Name field.
- Type your Exchange email address in the E-mail Address field.
- If you are at UBC Vancouver:
- In the Incoming mail server (IMAP) field, enter mail.exchange.ubc.ca
- In the Outgoing mail server (SMTP) field, enter smtp.exchange.ubc.ca
- If you are at UBC Okanagan:
- In the Incoming mail server (IMAP) field, enter mail.exchange.ok.ubc.ca
- In the Outgoing mail server (SMTP) field, enter smtp.exchange.ok.ubc.ca
- The User Name field should already be filled out for you but ensure that it contains your Exchange username.
- Your username is the first part of your email address. If your email address is username@exchange.ubc.ca, then your username is username.
- Enter your Exchange password in the Password field.
- Ensure that the Log on using Secure Password Authentication (SPA) box is not checked.
- Click the More Settings ... button.
- The Mail Account is the mail profile name. Under Mail Account, type in whatever you would like to refer to it as. ie. UBC Exchange - IMAPS
- Click the Outgoing Server tab.
- Place a checkmark next to My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication.
- Make sure that Use same settings as my incoming mail server is selected.
- Click the Advanced tab.
- Under Incoming server (IMAP), place a checkmark next to This server requires an SSL-secured connection (SSL).
- The number in the box next to Incoming mail (IMAP) server should automatically change to 993. If it doesn't, change the number in this box to 993.
- Under Outgoing server (SMTP), place a checkmark next to This server requires an SSL-secured connection (SSL).
- If you are at UBC Vancouver:
- Set the Port to 465.
- If you are at UBC Okanagan:
- Set the Port to 587.
- If you are at UBC Vancouver:
- Under Incoming server (IMAP), place a checkmark next to This server requires an SSL-secured connection (SSL).
- Click OK to return to the main settings window.
- Click Next.
- Click Finish to complete the setup.
- Restart Outlook for the changes to take effect.
- You should now be able to access your Exchange email using Secure IMAP.
