Free Matlab webinar - Friday May 11, 2012

Join MathWorks for free webinar on Simulink and the Symbolic Mathwith MATLAB . Click here for more information and to register.

MATLAB is a language for technical computing that combines numeric computation, advanced graphics and visualization, and a high-level programming language. MATLAB is the natural environment for analysis, algorithm prototyping, and application development.

UBC IT has a licence agreement with Mathworks to redistribute licences on campus. Licences provided under this agreement are network licences, which means that in order for the application to run the computer or workstation must have a network connection. Under our agreement with Mathworks we do not have individual workstation licences. MATLAB is compatible with UNIX, LINUX, MAC, and Windows operating systems.

Features

UBC's current version is MATLAB Release 2011b. Our license also provides the following Toolboxes for general use in our base license:

  • Simulink
  • Control System Toolbox
  • Image Processing Toolbox
  • MATLAB Compiler
  • Neural Network Toolbox
  • Optimization Toolbox
  • Robust Control Toolbox
  • Signal Processing Toolbox
  • Simulink Control Design
  • Statistics Toolbox
  • Symbolic Math Toolbox
  • System Identification Toolbox

Matlab supports Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Vista (32 and 64 bit), Windows 7 (32 and 64 bit), Linux (32 bit and 64 bit), Mac (PPC and Intel), and Sun Solaris. For detailed systems requirements please visit the Mathworks website .

If you would like a purchase extra Toolboxes not listed above that expand the functionality of Matlab, please contact us for a quote.

How to obtain the latest version of MATLAB

Existing customers

If you have purchased a license for MATLAB this fiscal year you can upgrade to the latest MATLAB release at any time with no additional cost.

Procedures

You can either download the new version of MATLAB from the UBC IT Saturn download server or borrow the DVDs. DVD's are not available for purchase. The download is approximately 4 GB and takes about 20 minutes using a campus network connection. Downloads from off-campus can take up to 3 hours depending on the speed of your network connection.

Installation

Matlab is installed as a network installation. Installation instructions will be sent when you purchase your license.

Resources

More detailed descriptions of the various toolboxes for Matlab are available here  and includes lots of demos, example code, and documentation.

Bug Reports/Alerts

The following is an alert from Mathworks:

If you are using R14SP3 Simulink code generation products, please review the following information. If you are not using R14SP3 versions of MathWorks products, please disregard this message.

We have identified bugs in R14SP3 Simulink ® code generation products, which in rare instances generate incorrect code that is not easily detected. These bugs have been fixed in subsequent releases: R2006a, R2006b, or the R2007a release.

To prevent impact from these bugs, R14SP3 code generation software users should take the following actions:
